As we entered 2016 I wrote about how I create my goals. First, I reflect on the year prior to see where I was successful and what I’d want to change or focus on. From there, I create my big goals for the upcoming year and whittle it down to trackable steps that can be measured week to week or month to month.
It took me a while but I finally created my visual to anchor my goals throughout the year.
When it comes to time I struggle to see in lines, so this spatial layout helps me a lot. From doing this layout, I’m never doing dotted outlines on a whole spread again! That aside, I do LOVE this layout and I hope you will find it useful.
Create the layout:
I wrote some of the more general goals up top as the foundation. I will be adding “to continue exploring” later. This will be a reference throughout the year. You’ll notice I have a few check boxes – for goals like “visit 5 state parks” and “read 5 books” it’s easier to quantify progress in this format.
To start timeline-ing, I break down these goals to some of the big milestones for each of the goals throughout the layout. Of course, these can adapt as life ebbs and flows, but it’s nice to have them spread out. Experiences like reading books are easy to sprinkle throughout, as well as time sensitive things like big celebrations and proposals for conferences, but it’s more difficult for projects with many many steps.
One of my big goals is to hone my crafts – teaching, brush lettering, watercolor, and pointed pen. I will likely make a separate collection to get more specific about what ones, or more specific skills in each, and classes to take. Since this one is more “any order works,” it is easier to brainstorm and then go from there.
My biggest goals to break down will be starting my shop and developing the blog – there are many steps and many routes to take, as well as a lot of reflection to do, so I will be creating collections to make action steps clearer and more manageable and putting the page numbers next to each goal as reference. Right now I don’t even know what a reasonable timeline would be on something like this, or even what all the steps are, so I’m putting very tentative dates down.
From here, I can go more month to month and day to day and create little steps that add up to the big picture. For example since I want to get better at the yoga position “crow pose” it will be easy for me to aim to going to 3 yoga sessions a month to get practice. Or with my goal of loving my body I aim to at least 2 glasses of water every day as well as intentionally planning meals that are based more on protein than carbs during our Sunday meetings. With these specific habits identified, it will make it easier to maintain progress toward these big goals even if I’m not looking at this page. Since I based these habits off of my big goals, I don’t have to worry about whether these tasks are worthwhile – they will take me closer to my goals.
